THE NEVSKY TO SERVE AS RUSSIAN ART CENTRE
Agreement to Usher in Venture with
Moscow Gallery and Cultural Ministry

The Nevsky: Fine and Applied Arts Studio is pleased to announce that it has concluded a joint venture agreement with the Gallery Arbatr (Moscow) for the exhibition of a major collection of Russian contemporary art.

At the time of its negotiation, the agreement provided that the Director of the Gallery Arbatr, Sergey Malyutin, would consign to The Nevsky a collection of more than fifty paintings, ten from each of at least five established figures in the Russian art world. The objective of this arrangement would be to strengthen The Nevsky’s stated purpose to serve as a North American port of entry for Russian art.

As the goals of the project were described in Moscow, the ministry of culture assumed a helpful presence and increased the volume of the collection to more than one hundred pieces, increasing the Moscow representation of artists as an extension of the 850th anniversary of the City’s founding. The scope of the collection will now make it possible for The Nevsky to mount a series of exhibitions featuring work in direct descent from the important schools of Malevich, Kandinsky, Filanov, and Chagall.

The full collection, which arrived at the beginning of August and was made ready over the last several weeks, includes paintings by Ivan Kolesnikov, Andre Medvedev, Anatoly and Vladimir Sergatchov, Alexei Krasavin, Sergey Malyutin, Irina Ratushniak, Mikhail Shtyriov, Mikhail Suzdaltsev and others. A substantial number have been published in catalogues and studies of contemporary Russian art. The artists have found place in international art auctions.

The first pieces of this collection will be formally opened to the public at Border’s Book on Wolf Road on September 15, where the work of Ivan Kolesnikov and Anatoly Sergatchov have been hung until the end of October. A reception for the general public will be held at the bookstore from 7 - 9 p.m.

On Wednesday October 1, 1997 The Nevsky will open a show, again with a reception between 7 - 9 p.m., entitled Revelations, featuring the work of Sergey Malyutin, at its new gallery at COHOES COMMONS. That exhibit will run until November 18.

At the gallery (The Nevsky) may also be found the works of Vladimir Kulikov, Philipp Dontsov, Sergei Oussik, Jury Shevchik, Vladimir Kuznetsov, Julia Naivalt, Dimitry Markitanov, Oleg Pomerantsev, et.al.
