JACK AERNECKE REVISITS TULA
KIRK NICEWONGER United Feature Syndicate and staff reports
WRGB NewsCenter 6 anchor Jack Aernecke presents a look at Albany's Russian
sister city in ``Tula Revisited'' (7 to 7:30 p.m., WRGB, Ch. 6). Aernecke
updates viewers on the progress made by the newly liberated residents of Tula,
which became Albany's sister city five years ago for the exchange of ideas and
a sharing of cultural traditions. Aernecke, who revisited the 850-year-old
community in October with videographer Mike McHugh, examines the growth of
religious faith and stories of incredible courage in keeping faith alive as
with Tulans who kept their Judaism from the government for six decades. The
Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York supplied gifts and students from
two Hebrew schools sent messages for the Jewish people of Tula. Citizens who
have just come through a 60-year struggle with communism are developing
private businesses using information gained through the Albany-Tula Alliance.
