SAINT ROSE JAZZ BAND HEADED FOR MOSCOW, TULA

The College of Saint Rose Chamber Jazz Ensemble leaves for Russia today for a 10-day tour which will include performances at the American Embassy in Moscow and at Albany's sister city, Tula.

The college's chamber jazz ensemble is an eight-piece version of The College of Saint Rose Jazz Ensemble. The band includes a trumpet, four saxophones, guitar, bass and drums and will be playing American jazz styles from bee-bop of the '40s to '90s jazz fusion.

The band's first stop is a seven-day stay in Tula, where they will perform at The University in Tula and perform a joint concert with a 10-piece Tulan band.

Paul Evoskevich, associate professor of music at Saint Rose, will perform classical music for piano and saxophone with Findlay Cockrell, professor of music at the University at Albany.

``We will be ambassadors for jazz music in a country that has not had extensive access to American jazz for the last 50 years,'' said Evoskevich.

The remaining days will be spent in Moscow, where the band will perform at the American Embassy.

Want to own a piece of the roof? The Rensselaer County Historical Society is looking for support for the new slate roof atop the 1827 Hart-Cluett Mansion. The Buy-A-Slate campaign kicks off Wednesday during National Historic Preservation Week.

Each $35 contribution helps to put up a roof slate. Those interested are invited to stop by RCHS headquarters at 59 Second St. in Troy on Wednesday.

The mansion's 100-year old metal roof began leaking two years ago. The original slate roof was apparently replaced with a metal roof in the late 19th century.

``Patches and prayers have prevented further major damage,'' said museum director Anne Ackerson.
